3D Modelling
Experiments in 3D designing.
Tasks:
- 3D modelling

Programs used:
- Maya
- Unity

About the project: Exploring 3D modeling through Maya was an enriching challenge that expanded my skill set and gave me valuable insights into the work of artists. Although 3D modeling is not my primary focus as a designer, the process deepened my understanding of visual storytelling and enhanced my ability to design physical installations with precision and realism.

From fantasy to functionality
My experiments ranged widely, from creating game-inspired fantasy models to designing accurate representations of factory machinery. Each type of model posed unique challenges, requiring me to adapt my approach based on the level of detail and purpose. While fantasy models allowed me to flex my creative muscles, the factory models demanded attention to technical accuracy and realism, pushing me to think critically about proportions and functionality.

Tackling the technicalities
One of the more challenging aspects of this journey was mastering UV unwrapping and texturing. This process was particularly intricate, and while it was more relevant for artists than for my role as a designer, tackling it helped me understand the depth of their work. I gained an appreciation for the precision and patience required to create seamless textures that elevate a model's quality.

Low-poly exploration
I found low-poly modeling especially engaging. It challenged me to simplify complex forms while maintaining their essence, a skill that parallels my approach to interaction and information design. This practice not only honed my technical abilities but also gave me a creative outlet to explore different styles and workflows.

Applications to physical design
Perhaps the most valuable takeaway from this experience was how it influenced my ability to design physical installations. By working with 3D models, I developed a better grasp of spatial relationships, materials, and assembly processes. This knowledge has proven invaluable when transitioning from digital concepts to tangible, interactive installations.

Takeaways and growth
Through this experience, I enhanced my collaboration skills by gaining a deeper understanding of artists' workflows, which helps bridge the gap between design and artistry. It also reaffirmed my belief in the value of stepping outside one’s core discipline to gain fresh perspectives and expand creative horizons.
